Decentralized micro-/minigrids will play a major role for the electrification (not only) of rural/island communities in emerging countries. A majority of these micro-/minigrids will be powered by renewable sources such as solar PV and wind power.

In this training we will focus on PV-Diesel hybrid systems with a high solar share. In a real-life case study we will be planning a system from scratch. That means we will talk in depth about available system topologies (DC- and/or AC-coupling) and currently available industry components incl. energy storage solutions. A focus will be the sizing procedure and its validation using simulation tools. In RENAC’s brand new PV-Hybrid lab you will then put together a real hybrid system and monitor its operation.

Besides technical issues the training will also cover socio-economic topics and analyze the project’s business case and financial implications. Both of these points are key factors for the sustainability of a rural electrification project.

This training suits those who:
  • Are responsible for power generation systems in rural areas.
  • Want to extend their grid-interactive PV knowledge to off-grid PV systems
  • Need to evaluate the opportunities solar powered micro-/minigrids

Basic knowledge of PV system components and energy yield is an advantage.

Lars Koerner, RENAC

Lars Koerner holds an engineering diploma in Environmental Technology and Renewable Energy from the University of Applied Sciences, Berlin. He has gained several years of experience as project engineer and senior product manager for photovoltaic systems with SolarWorld AG where he implemented one of the largest rural electrification projects with PV-Diesel hybrid systems worldwide. His experience in the area of solar energy spans further at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE), Freiburg where he worked on a monitoring concept for village power supply systems in China.

The second week of the RENAC’s Green Energy Summer School is a unique opportunity to learn more about photovoltaic (PV) and its applications. It covers all aspects of planning, installation, maintenance, quality management and monitoring of both grid-connected and off-grid PV systems. PV systems which are properly planned, installed and with an outstanding performance have a chance in solar markets of the future. Nevertheless, other aspects besides the plant design and installation are crucial to ensure their success. Therefore, non-technical issues related with the operation of PV systems (legal aspects, economics and financing) shall also be discussed. The course is structured in a way that participants with little or no technical experience can develop an understanding for PV technology so that they can assess PV projects from a technical perspective. The course covers planning, installation, maintenance, quality management and monitoring of grid-connected and stand-alone PV systems and includes a survey of potential applications. It combines theory with practical training in RENAC’s Training Center as well as plant visits.

Get to know the various renewable energy technologies and their economic potentials– in both urban and rural setting. This five days course gives the participants a structured overview of the different renewable energy sources, how they can be harnessed and used for the provision of energy in the form of electricity, heat and cold. It is perfect for those who are new to renewable energies and need a quick entry to its technical, commercial, legal or administrative aspects. Through a blended mix of instructor-led training, hands-on practical exercises and site visits participants will get a comprehensive overview of the main, commercially-viable renewable technologies, and come to understand how they work and how the different systems are designed. At the end of the five days, you will be able to assess the appropriateness of different technologies for different situations and undertake your own initial designs for renewable energy systems. Additionally the course will also present an overview of the renewable energy markets and latest market trends.

Lecturers:
Albrecht Tiedemann, RENAC:
Albrecht Tiedemann is the director for renewables grid integration and wind power at the Renewables Academy (RENAC) AG since 2008. He is currently responsible for the ReGrid program “capacity building on integration of large amounts of renewable energy in electricity grids” and the management of RENAC’s wind energy education program. He works as lecturer and moderates panel discussions, workshops, seminars and conferences. From 2003 to 2008 Mr. Tiedemann worked for the German Energy Agency and has been involved in consulting for the German Federal Minister of Economics & Technology, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, the European Commission and enterprises in the energy sector. From 1989 to 2003 he worked as a scientific assistant for the Federal Environmental Agency of Germany. Until 1989 he studied at the Technical University of Berlin and holds a diploma „Engineer of Environmental Protection Technology“.

Frank Jackson, RENAC:
Frank Jackson has been involved in the solar energy industry since the early 1990s, running courses and seminars, and designing and installing systems. He has worked in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Kenya, Tanzania and Somalia. Besides training activities, he has designed and installed numerous photovoltaic systems. He also is involved in running courses for people entering the renewable energies industry. He is editor of the Earthscan Expert series, a new series of books designed to providing clear, practical information for people who want to work with environmentally friendly low-carbon technologies; the books range from specific handbooks to more general guides.

Lars Koerner, RENAC:
Lars Koerner holds an engineering diploma in Environmental technology and renewable energy from the University of Applied Sciences, Berlin. He has gained several years of experience as project engineer and senior product manager for photovoltaic systems with SolarWorld AG where he also conducted worldwide trainings for staff and customers. He is an expert on decentralized solar hybrid mini-grids.

His experience in the area of solar energy spans further at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE), Freiburg where he worked on a monitoring concept for village power supply systems in China and the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

Katie Brown, RENAC:
Katie grew up in Northern Ireland and then went to study Mechanical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. She worked for Arups for two years as a building services engineer working on heating and ventilation system design, in particular on the New Justice Building in Antwerp, Belgium. In between times she has been involved with a development charity in Kenya, working with street children in Nairobi and doing a water supply project. Katie has spent six years working with renewable energy systems at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales, UK (www.cat.org.uk). Whilst there she did several domestic solar thermal and wood fuel installations as well as working on domestic PV systems, on- and offgrid, wind and hydro. Since 2008 she works as lecturer for RENAC.

Volker Jaensch, RENAC:
Volker Jaensch joined RENAC in August 2010. He has ten years professional experience in project development, due diligence, financing and implementation of renewable energy projects with focus on biomass and wind-energy (at daughter companies of Veolia Environment and Gamesa Energia). He also gained experience in the political arena of renewable energies at German Energy Agency. Before joining RENAC Volker was active for four years in the development and implementation of sustainable Carbon Credit generating projects (according to the Kyoto Protocol and the Gold Standard) in developing countries. Volker holds degrees in Environmental Engineering and Master of Business Administrati on (MBA.

Martin Schnauss, RENAC:
Martin Schnauss has been working in area of renewable energies for more than 2 decades. He is currently working as freelance engineer, working on feasibility and market studies and developing market introduction strategies. With respect to solar systems, both solar thermal and PV, he possesses profound experience in planning and construction, technical support, cost estimates, analyses of cost-effectiveness, monitoring an research, system optimising and computer simulation. In his career he has been working as an engineer for e.g. the Technical University of Berlin, German Solar Industry Association (BSW-Solar) or the engineering Dr. Valentin. Martin Schnauss regularly gives presentations in the context of national and international conferences and gained teaching experienced in many lectures and seminars on renewable energy technologies since the 1980ies.

Emilienne Tingwey, RENAC:
Emilienne Tingwey holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences and a Masters in Environmental and Resource Management from the Brandenburg Technical University (BTU) in Cottbus as of April 2009. She joined the Renewables Academy (RENAC) AG in Berlin in 2010 and started off as a project assistant in the international know-how transfer project TREE (Transfer Renewable Energy & Efficiency). With the completion of this project, she manages various tailor-made courses offered by RENAC, assists in the practical exercises of solar trainings and also supports the RENAC team in the implementation of international know-how transfer project ReGrid. Since 2012, she oversees the organization of the international study program GPE Solar which is offered by TU Berlin in cooperation with RENAC. She is presently the heads the Green Energy Summer School an annual study event of offered by RENAC. Born in Cameroon, Dr. Emilienne Tingwey grew up and studied in Cameroon right up to her bachelor degree before moving to Germany. She speaks fluent English, French, Pidgin, Moghamo and German.
